ADULT DAY TRAINING (ADT):
Provides structured, nonresidential programs for adults with disabilities, focusing on enhancing self-help, social, daily living, and vocational skills through meaningful, community-integrated activities to promote independence and participation in valued community routines, often including work-like settings or community outings.
OPERATING WITHOUT A CURRICULUM:
When ADTs operate without a structured, individualized, or high-quality curriculum, several educational conditions and potential negative outcomes may arise: (1)Inconsistent Quality of Instruction, (2)Lack of Clear Learning Objectives and Accountability, (3)Limited Progress on Individualized Goals, (4)Risk of Non-Compliance with State Regulations, (5)Focus on Satisfaction Over Skill Development, (6)Limited Postsecondary and Employment Options.
ADTS THAT ADOPT A STRUCTURED CURRICULUM:
Move beyond basic supervision toward empowering individuals with disabilities to thrive in their communities at their respective levels. In 2026 and beyond, the emphasis remains on transition support that prepares adults for the complexities of modern life...
A good curriculum is necessary to: (1)Ensure Consistency and Predictability, (2)Enhance Employability and Vocational Skills, (3)Support Social and Emotional Development, (4)Monitor and Tailor Individual Progress, (5)Improve Quality of Care and Staff Performance.
ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL - DIFFERENTIATION AND FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENTS:
Adults with disabilities cover a wide spectrum. However, they can generally be grouped into three domains of functioning: HIGH Functioning, MODERATE Functioning, and LOW Functioning (or those with profound disabilities). The disparity that exists between domains can greatly benefit and be mitigated by a curriculum that addresses all three equally - generalizing and differentiating when necessary and using functional assessments to identify individual skills and deficits.
WHERE THE GREATEST DISPARITY WILL EXIST:
The greatest disparity between Adults with disabilities that must be targeted by a structured curriculum is between those that are High Functioning and Low Functioning...

ARC HAVEN'S ADULT DAY TRAINING CURRICULUM:
Arc Haven's approach to ADT curriculum is multifaceted. We consider the foundations of General Intelligence and the Adaptive Skills needed for successful daily living and broadly target those areas using lessons, activities, training, and modeling. Furthermore, we "fine tune" or differentiate our curriculum based on the individual using Functional Assessments and Progress Monitoring to track effectiveness.
