ADULT DAY TRAINING (ADT):

Provides structured, nonresidential programs for adults with disabilities, focusing on enhancing self-help, social, daily living, and vocational skills through meaningful, community-integrated activities to promote independence and participation in valued community routines, often including work-like settings or community outings.

OPERATING WITHOUT A CURRICULUM:

When ADTs operate without a structured, individualized, or high-quality curriculum, several educational conditions and potential negative outcomes may arise: (1)Inconsistent Quality of Instruction(2)Lack of Clear Learning Objectives and Accountability, (3)Limited Progress on Individualized Goals, (4)Risk of Non-Compliance with State Regulations, (5)Focus on Satisfaction Over Skill Development, (6)Limited Postsecondary and Employment Options.

ADTS THAT ADOPT A STRUCTURED CURRICULUM:

Move beyond basic supervision toward empowering individuals with disabilities to thrive in their communities at their respective levels. In 2026 and beyond, the emphasis remains on transition support that prepares adults for the complexities of modern life...

A good curriculum is necessary to: (1)Ensure Consistency and Predictability, (2)Enhance Employability and Vocational Skills, (3)Support Social and Emotional Development, (4)Monitor and Tailor Individual Progress, (5)Improve Quality of Care and Staff Performance

ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL - DIFFERENTIATION AND FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENTS:

Adults with disabilities cover a wide spectrum. However, they can generally be grouped into three domains of functioning: HIGH Functioning, MODERATE Functioning, and LOW Functioning (or those with profound disabilities). The disparity that exists between domains can greatly benefit and be mitigated by a curriculum that addresses all three equally - generalizing and differentiating when necessary and using functional assessments to identify individual skills and deficits.

WHERE THE GREATEST DISPARITY WILL EXIST:

The greatest disparity between Adults with disabilities that must be targeted by a structured curriculum is between those that are High Functioning and Low Functioning...

Critical Skills Needed for High Functioning Individuals with Disabilities

  • Refine Complex Life Management Skills: High-functioning individuals often require instruction beyond basic hygiene. A good curriculum focuses on advanced financial management (e.g., computing sales tax, budgeting for rent), time management, and independent travel to navigate public transportation safely.
  • Bridge to Competitive Employment: Programs utilize pre-vocational and workforce training to develop marketable competencies. This includes explicit instruction in workplace etiquette, problem-solving, and resume building that emphasizes specific skills rather than just work history.
  • Foster Self-Advocacy and Autonomy: A quality curriculum encourages participants to select their own activities and set personal goals. It teaches the legal rights provided under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), empowering them to communicate their needs effectively to employers and service providers.
  • Facilitate Social Integration and "Soft Skills": Curriculum-based activities like collaborative projects and workshops help participants master interpersonal skills, teamwork, and conflict resolution. These "soft skills" are often the most vital factors for success in community-based job settings.
  • Provide Post-Secondary Transition Support: For many, ADT serves as a bridge to higher education or vocational certifications. A curriculum ensures that transition planning is multifaceted, including college planning and career exploration tailored to the individual's specific interests.
  • Prevent Under-Stimulation and Boredom: High-functioning adults are at risk of disengagement if tasks are too simple. A structured curriculum offers a diverse range of STEM education, such as computer skills, solving puzzles, gardening, and various creative arts that challenge their cognitive abilities and promote personal growth.

Critical Skills Needed for Low Functioning Individuals with Disabilities

  • Prioritize Essential "Pillars" of Development: Programs for those with severe disabilities center on five critical areas: communication, sensory engagement, personal care, physical health, and emotional wellbeing. A curriculum ensures these areas are addressed systematically rather than sporadically.
  • Establish Communication Pathways: For non-verbal individuals, a curriculum often includes specialized training in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) methods or devices. This provides them with a consistent way to express basic needs and preferences.
  • Provide Vital Sensory Stimulation: Individuals with profound disabilities often require specific sensory diets to prevent under- or over-stimulation. A curriculum incorporates structured sensory activities—such as tactile bins, music therapy, or "sensory rooms"—to improve mood, reduce anxiety, and enhance sensory processing.
  • Maintain Physical Health and Mobility: Without a structured plan, individuals with significant physical limitations may remain sedentary. Curriculums should include adapted physical activities (using chairs, water, etc.) to improve strength, coordination, and circulation.
  • Prevent "Institutional Passivity": A lack of structured instruction can lead to excessive downtime where participants are "checked out." Curriculum creates routine where repetition and modeling helps individuals with severely impaired cognition understand and participate.
  • Enable Data-Driven Individualized Care: For individuals who may not show rapid progress, a curriculum allows staff to track even the smallest incremental achievements in their Individualized Care Plan (ICP). This documentation is essential for justifying continued services and adjusting support strategies as needed.

ARC HAVEN'S ADULT DAY TRAINING CURRICULUM:

Arc Haven's approach to ADT curriculum is multifaceted.  We consider the foundations of General Intelligence and the Adaptive Skills needed for successful daily living and broadly target those areas using lessons, activities, training, and modeling. Furthermore, we "fine tune" or differentiate our curriculum based on the individual using Functional Assessments and Progress Monitoring to track effectiveness.
