To equip children and adults with disabilities with the practical skills they need to live as independently and successfully as possible at home, school, and in the community.

Supporting Individuals with Disabilities in Developing Life and Adaptive Skills.

Purpose:
To equip children and adults with disabilities with the practical skills they need to live as independently and successfully as possible at home, school, and in the community.

Key Skill Areas:

  • Self-Care: Hygiene, grooming, dressing, toileting, and feeding.
  • Communication: Expressing needs, understanding others, using assistive technology if needed.

  • Social Skills: Making friends, sharing, following rules, conflict resolution.

  • Daily Living Skills: Cooking simple meals, managing money, cleaning, using public transportation.

  • Safety Awareness: Recognizing danger, asking for help, understanding boundaries.

  • Executive Functioning: Planning, organizing, time management, following directions.

Strategies Used:

  • Task Analysis: Breaking tasks into small, manageable steps.
  • Modeling and Role-Playing: Demonstrating and practicing appropriate behaviors.

  • Visual Supports: Charts, schedules, and pictures to aid understanding.

  • Consistent Routines: Reinforcing predictability and structure.

  • Positive Reinforcement: Encouraging effort and progress.

  • Collaboration: Involving families, educators, therapists, and caregivers.

Life Skills Development Services (Levels 1–4)

Level 1 – Companion

  • Purpose: Provides non‑medical care, supervision, and socialization to adults (21+) who need support to access community activities aligned with their plan goals. Services are delivered one-on-one or in small groups (max 3).

Level 2 – Supported Employment

  • Purpose: Assists in securing, maintaining, and improving employment, at or above minimum wage, including self‑employment. Can be individual, group, or small business support.

Level 3 – Adult Day Training (ADT)

  • Purpose: Offers structured training in self-help, socialization, adaptive and community participation for adults (usually 22+) in non-residential settings. Can include volunteerism and job exploration.

Level 4 – Prevocational Services

  • Purpose: Provides up to 36 months of pre-employment skill-building (communication, workplace conduct, problem-solving) in volunteer or training settings to prepare for supported employment.

  • Timeline & Transition: Service is time-limited to 3 years; after this, participants typically transition to employment or other programs.
